Science Projects With Seltzer Water

I just came across this great collection of Science Projects With Seltzer. My favorite is the carbonated lava lamp!

Another experiment involves creating an Alka-Seltzer water lava lamp. A 16-ounce soda pop bottle should be emptied and cleaned, then filled 3/4 full with vegetable oil and the rest of the way with plain water, just up to the neck of the bottle. Color the water with 10 drops of food coloring. Break up one Alka-Seltzer tablet into about six to eight pieces and drop them in one at a time, watching for a reaction. When the reaction is completed, twist the bottle top on tightly. Shake the bottle, mixing contents thoroughly and observe the results.

Read more here and, if you do any of them, let me know how it goes!

DIY Seltzer???

Okay, this looks TOTALLY crazy to me. The DIY movement I usually admire - the why-buy-when-I-can-make-it-myself crowd. But carbonation is SERIOUS business - you're dealing with pressure and things explode. Seltzer delivery men had to (and still have to) contend with the potential of losing hands to exploding glass. Yet, some folks would rather take the risk.

For those looking for the "Clffs Notes" summary of how this works: Take a 20lb CO2 Tank and regulator, attach a tube, and stick a 99 cent locking ball air chuck (tire inflator) on the end of the tube. Pop a cheap snap-in tire valve (schrader valve) into a plastic soda bottle cap and you're ready to carbonate any liquid in about 30 seconds. Colder liquids absorb more carbonation.

And in the end it still costs $100. Why not just by a SodaStream? Of most interest to me are the health and environmental reasons justifying this towards the end.

The Three Stooges and Seltzer

I have just started looking into the relationship between seltzer and the Three Stooges. Such fun!

The www.threestooges.net web site defines their "Water seltzer fight" as a routine in which: "The Stooges get into a water seltzer fight by spraying seltzer bottles in each other's faces repeatedly. One of them usually ends up holding the bottle backwards and accidentally spraying some in his own face." Nice.

The same site recommends four specific Stooge films where you can find them. Do you know of others?

Yes, We Have No Bonanza
Three Loan Wolves
No Dough Boys
Love At First Bite

Others have also recommended Three Little Pigskins and The Woman Hater.
